The category is crochet versus knitting, and we have 8 projects to choose from. Let’s see where these projects lead us.
Hey everyone, welcome to another episode of Sparks Unlocked, the musical, a place where we read, crochet, knit, and gaze at the moon. For the past two years, I have gone down the rabbit hole of learning more about crochet and knitting. Most importantly, I’ve been learning more about what crochet and knitting mean to me. One of my favorite hobbies within crochet and knitting is crocheting or knitting the same item. With this hobby, I’ve developed some preferences and…I have some thoughts. Here are my preferences for the following projects. Please understand that this is a highly opinionated post. My goal is to encourage anyone who reads this to explore their own preferences.
Crochet and knitting are often seen as the same craft. However, they are different and have their own advantages, based on what kind of crafter you are.
1. Beanie
I’m split on this one. If you want to finish a beanie faster, I would recommend crochet. From my experience, you can finish a beanie in a day if you crochet it. I’m a slower knitter, so it may take me more time to knit a beanie. If you want a beanie with more flexibility in the fabric and more intricate designs, I recommend knitting. If you are playing yarn chicken and want to make sure that you have enough yarn to finish your beanie, I would recommend knitting.
2. Scarf
I’m also split on this one. Whenever I’m thinking of scarves, I’m thinking of squares. How many colorful crocheted or knitted squares can I fit into one scarf? As far as my imagination takes me, crochet and knitting both provide great options. I would also recommend scarves for someone learning to knit or crochet. They’re both great beginner projects. It’s also a great way to practice stitches and to work on your stitch tension.
3. Blanket
For this project, I would say crochet, hands down. Unless you’re knitting with chunky yarn or doing a finger-knitting project, crochet would be the best way to go. Crochet is known to be a faster craft than knitting, and crocheting a blanket is already a serious undertaking. With all of those factors combined, crochet is the better option. Two years ago, I crocheted a scrap yarn blanket that took me about 4-5 months. With knitting, that may take longer. I am still open to knitting a blanket. I will not count it out.
4. Book/Laptop Sleeve
I have crocheted multiple book sleeves and recently finished a knit laptop sleeve. If I had to choose one, I would choose the knitted laptop sleeve. It may be that I enjoyed the simplicity of the project along with the yarn color, but I also liked that it took a short amount of time to knit and I didn’t use a lot of yarn in the process. Typically, a simple crocheted book sleeve would take less than 1-2 skeins of yarn max, but at this time, I’m interested in exploring more knitted book sleeves. I still have a lot of love for crocheted book sleeves and will definitely make more in the future. However, for book sleeves and laptop sleeves, knitting is where my heart is at the moment.
5. Sweater
I prefer to knit sweaters, but the season plays a factor here. For fall, my answer is knitting, every time. For winter, I would say crochet. For a spring or summer sweater, my answer is crochet. For the projects I have in mind, a crocheted project works up faster. Even with all of these varying factors, my preference is still knitting. I prefer the feel of the garment and knitting a collar is less complicated for me. One of my goals is to crochet and knit a particular kind of sweater and compare the process. Stay tuned for that!
6. Tote Bag
I am currently knitting my first tote bag and…I prefer crochet. Over the past couple of years, I’ve crocheted a few tote bags. I find the process to be simpler and more straightforward. Also, while knitting my current tote bag project, I’m realizing I have preferences for knitting and crocheting with certain fabrics, which I find interesting. It may be a preference for certain stitches as well. However, if you asked me whether you should crochet or knit this project, I would say to crochet it.
7. Colorwork/Tapestry
For simple colorwork, I prefer to crochet. It’s a simpler process to change colors and weaving in the ends is easier for me. For tapestry, I prefer knitting. The stitches are more easily defined, and I’ve found it to be an easier process. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I am still learning how to master tapestry crochet. For the time being, I am exploring cross-stitching on top of my crochet projects. I will share updates on this as soon as I can.
8. Cardigan
For cardigans, I prefer to crochet. I agree, the drape and feel of a knitted cardigan are so beautiful. However, if you’re learning how to make a cardigan for the first time, I would recommend crocheting one first. Now, let’s get into the seasons. My answers are pretty similar to sweaters. For fall, I prefer crocheted and knitted cardigans. For winter, crocheted cardigans do the trick. For spring and summer, I would recommend crochet.
Even with these preferences, I’m still open to crocheting or knitting the project, no matter what it is. Crochet and knitting are teaching me to stay open-minded and to keep exploration and adventure at the forefront of my mind. However, if you are learning how to crochet or knit or you’re trying one of these projects for the first time, these would be my suggestions after saying to try both and see what suits you.
Are you a crocheter who also knits or a knitter who also crochets? What are your preferences for these projects. Let me know in the comments below.
Thank you for being here, I’ll chat with you in the next blog. Good day or good night!
